We’re seeing history be made in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Mayor Monroe Nichols, the city’s first Black mayor, recently announced a $105 million reparations plan for residents of the Historic Greenwood District. This was the site of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, where the city of Tulsa deputized white civilians to kill Black residents, burn their homes, and loot their businesses.

Now, reparations for this government-sanctioned massacre are within reach.

Funds for housing, cultural preservation, and educational scholarships will be directed to survivors of the massacre, their descendants, and the majority of Black residents in north Tulsa.

Mayor Nichols’ historic plan for reparations is a crucial step in securing justice for generations of violence and suppression in Oklahoma.
