Dear John,
We need your help identifying live animal markets in the United States.
Live animal markets refer to facilities where animals are both slaughtered and then sold direct-to-consumer onsite, regardless of size and number of species. A wide range of animals are killed in these markets—from farmed animals like chickens and goats to frogs and turtles.
Animals used in live markets suffer extreme cruelty—terrified and confined to tiny, filthy cages before being slaughtered. The link between the COVID-19 pandemic and a live market in China has thrust these facilities into the international spotlight. But live animal markets also exist in the United States.
Live animal markets are not only cruel, they can be a breeding ground for zoonotic diseases. Unsanitary and inhumane practices like keeping animals in cages stacked on top of one another are commonplace.
To help protect animals and public health, the Animal Legal Defense Fund is working to develop comprehensive food and safety policies addressing live animal markets. If you’re aware of a market in your community, please tell us using our online submission form.
