Hi John, A loud boom. Homes shaking. A fireball shooting 450 feet into the air. Dark clouds of smoke burning in the distance. Tomorrow marks three years since Freeport LNG, the second largest liquified “natural” gas (LNG) plant in the country, exploded and caught on fire. Residents living nearby were never informed about the explosion they felt until they turned their TVs to the nightly news. Despite demanding accountability from the company through letters and meetings, Freeport LNG has refused to sit down with residents and tell them what their new emergency response plan is. Right now, the Trump Administration is preparing to rewrite rules for LNG, which could weaken safety requirements and lead to more accidents—like the June 8th explosion. John, with your input we can demand strong safety standards that prioritize community input, worker safety, and transparency of the risks associated with living near LNG export infrastructure.
