This year marks a huge milestone for me. Thirty years ago, my family came to America.
I was born in Somalia and raised in a refugee camp after my family was forced to flee violence and instability. I came to the US as an asylum-seeker, and eventually earned my citizenship.
Of course, there were many roadblocks along the way. Legal hurdles, financial hardship, xenophobia and bullying to name a few. But my family and I persevered, and I am proud to now represent my community here in Minnesota in Congress.
Immigrants like me understand the promise of America, which is why I know we can do better, and why I fight for a better future for ALL of us, every single day.
We can be a country that rejects the fear and hate of the far-right. We can guarantee healthcare, stable housing, and a quality education for everyone. We can do big things like tackle climate change and rebuild public infrastructure.
And yes, we can be a country that continues our legacy of welcoming immigrants from around the world who are looking for a better life just like I was.
These are long-term goals, I know that. But that’s why we’re building a grassroots movement – a movement that can endure through Donald Trump or any other obstacle to deliver on our vision of prosperity for all.
If you share that vision of the future, I am asking for your support today. Chip in $5 or whatever you can as we continue to build a movement to defeat the far-right create a better world for ALL of us, and not just the wealthy and privileged few.

America is and has always been a nation of immigrants. It’s now our job to make sure that everyone enjoys the safety, respect, and dignity they deserve. I hope I can count on you to join me in that fight.
In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
