Animals mutilated in the name of ritual. Custom. Culture. It happens all the time and all around us.
That’s why the focus of our next webinar is the intersection between tradition and animal abuse. It’s called β€œCulture and Cruelty: Combating Traditions, Customs, and Faith that Justify the Mistreatment of Animals.”
For example, investigators are uncovering an alarming trend in urban parks across New York and New Jersey: the mutilation and sacrifice of animals as part of suspected ritual practices. Dogs, goats, chickens β€” found decapitated, gutted, or bound β€” often with candles and other ceremonial items nearby.
Some Native American rituals call for the abuse and sacrifice of eagles. Cockfighters justify their bloodsport in part as a family legacy, a pastime to be shared from father to son. And across the country, cruel rodeos, pig chases, and more are treated as family-friendly entertainment.
