Happy Pride Month!
From Michelle Allison, King County Metro General Manager
This week, I had the honor of raising the Pride Progress Flag at Bellevue Base alongside colleagues from Metro’s LGBTQIA+* Employee Resource Group, members of the Metro Leadership Team, Chief People Officer Megan Pedersen and base employees. The flag was raised following a brief program of speakers—a meaningful moment that reminded us of the power of visibility and community. This annual tradition is one of the many ways Metro shows solidarity with our LGBTQIA+ family, friends, and coworkers. It’s a joyful and powerful way to begin our month of celebration, reflection and advocacy.
Pride Month is an annual celebration of the many contributions LGBTQIA+ communities have made to history, society, and cultures around the world. In most places, it’s observed in June to honor the legacy of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising—a pivotal moment in the movement for LGBTQIA+ rights. While Pride Month is a time for celebration, it’s also a call to action. Across the country, anti-trans legislation and rising acts of violence and hate continue to threaten the safety and dignity of LGBTQIA+ people. There is still much work to be done.
Earlier this week, King County Executive Shannon Braddock issued a proclamation officially recognizing June 2025 as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in King County. This formal recognition underscores our collective commitment to advancing equity, standing up to hate, and celebrating the strength and diversity of LGBTQIA+ communities.
At Metro, we remain committed to advancing equity and creating a culture where everyone can show up as their full selves. Each of us has a part to play in making Metro a workplace where all people are valued, supported and safe—regardless of who they are or who they love. Together, we will keep pushing for meaningful change within our organization and in the communities we serve.
As part of that commitment, Metro is proud to be a part of several events this month that uplift LGBTQIA+ communities and invite connection, learning and action. Below are a couple of ways you can engage with Pride and Metro this June.
Attend and cheer on King County in the Seattle Pride Parade – June 29 Metro is excited to once again join the Seattle Pride Parade. This year’s theme, Louder, honors voices that broke the silence and calls on us to continue amplifying stories within our communities.
Metro at TransPride and PrideFests
In addition to the Seattle Pride Parade, you can also find Metro tabling at TransPride (June 27), and (June 29) this month. We’ll be there to share all things Metro—from job opportunities to community programs, resources and more.
*Footnote: LGBTQIA+ is an acronym that represents a spectrum of sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions. The letters stand for: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual; the “+” represents the inclusion of other identities, such as pansexual, genderqueer, non-binary and more.
