Republicans are close to passing the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” – a federal budget proposal packed with Donald Trump’s worst priorities. Let’s be clear, John: it would be a disaster if this bill passes.
You may have heard how it would cut over $700 billion from Medicaid, $300 billion from SNAP, and roll back progress on important issues like clean energy — all to give massive tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires.
That’s all true, but Republicans are packing as many dangerous provisions into the bill as possible, including an attack on the judiciary.
Here’s what you might not know: this bill could make it nearly impossible for courts to block Trump’s unlawful agenda.
Right now, courts can enforce orders blocking the Trump administration’s policies with the threat of contempt. If government officials don’t comply, they face penalties including fines, sanctions, or even jail time. But a new rule would require litigants to post a bond before the courts can find the government in contempt.
The bond could be astronomical, matching what’s at stake in the lawsuit. In the past, that meant trillions of dollars. This administration would have a free pass to ignore court orders.
To protect our courts, the separation of powers, and our democracy, we have to stop this bill. It only passed the House by a single vote. Now, we have the chance to kill it in the Senate.
That’s why we’re joining with progressive groups across the country to flood the Senate with opposition today. We need to push our Senators to vote NO on this dangerous budget and its sneaky provisions to undermine our courts.
