Legislative Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It’s been "three weeks" since the Legislature’s official May 19th adjournment deadline—and I’ll be honest with you: I’m frustrated. And if your inbox and phone calls are anything like mine, I know I’m not alone.

While House Republicans have been here at the Capitol—day in, day out—doing the hard work of negotiating, reviewing language, and trying to finalize a budget, our Governor… decided to hop on a plane to South Carolina.

Yes, really. Instead of working with us to get the job done for Minnesotans, Governor Walz was out campaigning, giving fiery speeches about how his party needs to "“be a little meaner.”" (You can watch it for yourself here [ [link removed] ]—he said it loud and clear.)

Let’s be real: That kind of rhetoric might fire up a crowd, but it doesn’t help a single working mom in Duluth or a single small business in Baxter trying to keep the lights on. It doesn’t fix the budget, it doesn’t make our communities safer, and it sure doesn’t build trust in leadership.

My colleague, Rep. Max Rymer (R-North Branch), said it well in his post on X [ [link removed] ]:

“If Walz runs for re-election, his entire 3rd term will instantly be devoted to running for President. Given our spending, fraud, crime problems—how’s that remotely acceptable?”

I couldn’t agree more. Minnesotans aren’t asking for drama. They’re asking for results. They’re asking for a Governor who will "lead"—not abandon his state.

I ran for office to serve my community, not to climb a political ladder. So while others chase headlines and photo ops, I’ll keep doing what I promised: showing up, rolling up my sleeves, and fighting for the families, farmers, and small businesses that make our state great.

You deserve accountability, you deserve a balanced budget, and you deserve leadership that puts you first—not presidential politics.

With that in mind, *a special session has officially been called for Monday.* If you’d like to follow along and see the work being done in real time, you can watch the session live [HERE]. [ [link removed] ]

Catching Up with Our Very Own Princess Kay!
1

What a joy to catch up with Princess Kay of the Milky Way—one of our district’s own! After finishing her first year at the University of Minnesota, she’s continuing to represent Minnesota’s proud dairy tradition with grace, grit, and a whole lot of heart.

It’s always inspiring to see young women stepping up to serve and lead. Keep shining—you’re making your hometown proud!

Dairy Days in Hutchinson!
11

We had a blast at this year’s Dairy Days in Hutchinson—a beloved local tradition that never disappoints! A big thank you to the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce for the kind invitation and for all the work you do to bring our community together.

It was great to check out Olita’s Sips, a fun new business on Main Street—if you haven’t stopped by yet, be sure to swing in!

Beyond the ice cream and sunshine, I had some meaningful conversations with constituents, our local mayor, small business owners, and community leaders. A lot of folks are raising valid concerns about the implementation of the new Paid Family and Medical Leave program and how it could affect local businesses. These are important conversations, and I’m committed to making sure your voices are heard at the Capitol.

Pictured above is Dave, a supervisor of Day Programs at MRCI and a proud constituent from Glencoe. He also coaches baseball at GSL—go Panthers! Huge thanks to Dave for bringing MRCI clients out to enjoy Dairy Days. Your heart for our community shines through in everything you do!

No More Distractions — It’s Time to Deliver

At the end of the day, this isn’t about partisanship—it’s about priorities. And mine haven’t changed since the day I was elected: serve with integrity, listen to my community, and fight for common-sense solutions that put Minnesotans first.

With a special session officially set for Monday, I’ll be right back at the Capitol—ready to get to work and do what’s right for the people of District 17A. You can count on me to keep showing up, speaking out, and standing firm—because you deserve leadership that’s present, principled, and focused on results.

As always, if you have questions, concerns, or just want to share your perspective ahead of Monday’s session, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your voice matters, and I’m here to listen.

Sincerely,

Representative Dawn Gillman

Minnesota House of Representatives, District 17A
