Medicaid cuts? gnarly

These days, trying to break into the headlines feels harder than trying to break into the Billboard Top 10 after Morgan Wallen drops an album. But with more than $1 trillion ([link removed]) on the line for crucial programs that help millions of Americans survive, we have to admit we were troubled by our latest polling result.

In an open-ended question fielded from May 30 to June 1, we asked our survey respondents ([link removed]) : “In the past week, what's the one specific news story you heard, saw, or read about the most?”

The top news story for voters continues to be tariffs and the TACO hell we all live in, followed by “nothing” (we wish that were us).

Only 44 respondents gave a response related to the GOP budget bill, representing 4% of the total sample. Of those respondents, 14 specifically mention cuts to social programs, like Medicaid or SNAP, or Social Security.

It should be at least a little bit concerning to Democrats that the news of millions of Americans getting thrown off their health care has yet to break through to voters. Can we get Sabrina Carpenter to write a new song about Medicaid cuts?

Maybe the news of the world’s worst situationship finally imploding in on itself will bring some attention to the “disgusting abomination ([link removed]) ” of a bill.

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

Pride parades >>>>> military parades

So, Trump is turning 79 next week, but for all the commotion he’s making around his upcoming birthday, you’d think it was his Sweet 16. While we get to celebrate World Pride in DC this weekend, next weekend we get to show off all the tax money we’ve spent on the U.S. military and force troops to march through the streets for our Supreme Leader! Hooray!

We teamed up with Common Dreams to survey ([link removed]) 574 U.S. veterans — a cohort that skews older and male — and we found that even they do not support ordering active duty U.S. military troops to perform a parade in honor of Trump’s birthday.

And unsurprisingly, veterans also disapprove of other recent Trump actions, like firing 83,000 health care and benefits workers from the VA and removing materials relating to the accomplishments of women and minority groups in the military.

We all know that President Bone Spurs ([link removed]) wouldn’t know anything about serving our country, but he could actually listen to actual military veterans instead of putting on Pentagonpalooza.

No hate, protect 988!

In 2020, it was President Donald Trump who originally signed the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act into law toward the end of his first term, which shortened the hotline’s 10-digit number to 988 (remember the Logic song?) and required specialized services for high-risk populations like LGBTQ+ youth and veterans.

Today, it’s also Donald Trump who is trying to cut those very same services for LGBTQ+ youth that he signed into law five years ago! Talk about a microtrend follower.

A strong majority of voters ([link removed]) (69%) say that we should keep these specialized services in place, while less than 1 in 4 voters (23%) say the government should eliminate them.

While we’re on the subject of cutting government programs, we’ve been hearing a lot these days about making cuts to Elon’s government subsidies ([link removed]) … and unlike cutting suicide prevention programs or Medicaid, we would only be targeting the richest man in the world!
