Email from Judy Chu For most of last month, my GOP colleagues held marathon meetings to push through their disastrous budget bill.   Dear John, May was busy! For most of last month, the GOP House members held marathon meetings to push through their disastrous budget bill. During the 17.5 hour Ways and Means Committee meetings, I fought against the massive cuts in this bill, and highlighted my constituents who would be greatly impacted by the cuts. I proposed amendments to stop tax cuts for people who make over $10 million a year and to prevent major funding cuts to the Affordable Care Act. My GOP colleagues voted against both measures. When House Republicans called a vote in the middle of the night on the bill's final passage, I voted no to taking away your health care to give billionaires tax breaks. Last month I also introduced two bills in Congress. One, the Stop Mental Health Stigma in Our Communities Act, will address the mental health crisis facing the AANHPI community. The other is the Fairness, Inclusion, Rehabilitation, and Expungement for Incarcerated Firefighters Act, which I introduced with my colleague Rep. Sydney Kamlager Dove of Los Angeles. This bill would raise wages for the incarcerated wildfire firefighter crews and help them rehabilitate and assimilate back into society. I participated in a sit-in with federal workers at the Capitol to speak out against the massive cuts and mass layoffs from the Trump Administration for medical research—including breast cancer studies. Then, in response to the Trump Administration trying to revoke the visas of thousands of Chinese students, I spoke out, strongly condemning this xenophobic policy. All the while, recovery from the Eaton Fire is moving forward. I hosted two roundtable discussions with the California Congressional delegation and other officials to discuss long-term housing options for my constituents who are still struggling to find housing after losing their homes in the fire. I also demanded better testing for toxins in the soil of affected properties so we have the information we need to rebuild safely. While this month was hectic with late-night votes and nonstop debate about the budget, I am still fired up to speak out against this bill while it moves through the Senate. I'll continue to speak out for the working families in California and across the country who will be impacted by these cuts. I will keep fighting for you, your families, and your futures—no matter what.
