It’s Gun Violence Awareness Month. Here’s what we’re fighting for:
John, gun violence is more than a political issue to me (and countless others).
I was 17 when I survived one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.
It’s been more than seven years since the massacre at my high school in Parkland, Florida. And not a day goes by that I don’t think about the friends I lost — or the generations before and after me who’ve lived through the trauma of gun violence.
June is Gun Violence Awareness Month. But for me and for too many others who have experienced it firsthand, every month is a reminder of what happens when politicians choose catering to the gun lobby over taking action and saving lives.
That’s why I helped launch Leaders We Deserve — to elect a new wave of young, bold progressives who are part of the school shooting generation and understand that “thoughts and prayers” don’t save any lives from gun violence. Policy does.
We are building a movement to elect candidates who:
- Grew up practicing active shooter drills.
- Know what it’s like to fear for their safety in classrooms and public spaces.
- Are done waiting on a broken political system to act.
These are the people who will pass universal background checks, ban assault weapons, and finally treat gun violence like the public health crisis it truly is.
But they can’t do it alone. Electing these bold candidates takes real resources.
