Dear Friends,
This week, I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the grand opening of The Pearl, Charlotte's new innovation district. This facility unites cutting-edge medical training, academia and the most innovative names in health technology. The Pearl is designed to ignite collaboration, catalyze economic growth, and drive innovative solutions for the city, region, and beyond.
With this facility, Charlotte welcomes its first four-year medical school as Wake Forest University School of Medicine — Charlotte is set to welcome its first class of students this July.
The site will also feature new community-focused spaces like the STEM learning laboratory, a project I was proud to secure $3.4 million in federal funding for. The STEM lab will give Charlotte students, and especially our kids from Title I schools, hands-on education, learning, and mentorship opportunities in STEM fields.
The Pearl is located in the historical Brooklyn neighborhood — home to Charlotte's largest African American community and economic center before it was razed by the city's urban renewal projects in the 60s and 70s — the district is designed to reflect that legacy of resilience. With exhibits that pay homage to Brooklyn’s enduring legacy, the Pearl aims to be a place where people from all walks of life will feel welcome and grow together.
The Pearl will no doubt have extraordinary economic impact to the City of Charlotte, expand healthcare access across our region, and provide a critical space for community engagement. I was proud to be involved with this incredible project.

This week, I questioned Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon on HBCUs, as well as federal education grant administration and compliance, in the House Education & Workforce hearing on “Examining the Policies and Priorities of the Department of Education.”
In the wake of the Trump Administration's continued attacks on our nation's education system, I remain committed to fighting for students and teachers to ensure they have the resources they need.

Earlier this week, I sat down with North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai this week to talk about the state of health in NC.
Cuts to Medicaid and SNAP will threaten healthcare and food security for hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians, and I will continue fighting for these essential basic needs programs in Congress.
|
I also had had the opportunity to questioned Department of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer on enforcing child labor protections in the face of historic cuts, as well as the Department of Labor's impact on HBCUs, in the House Education & Workforce hearing on “Examining the Policies and Priorities of the Department of Labor.”
Protecting the workers of today and developing the workforce of tomorrow remain among my top priorities in Congress. I will continue to push back against the Trump Administration's efforts to subvert the rights of our nation's workers.

Presidential Leadership Scholars (PLS) – a joint leadership development program led by the presidential centers of George W. Bush, William J. Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Lyndon B. Johnson – is now accepting applications through July 20 for its 2026 class.
For over a decade, PLS has selected established professionals across all job sectors and backgrounds to learn about leadership through the experiences of these four presidents.
During the six-month program, selected professionals will hone their leadership skills through interactions and sessions with key administration officials, business executives, and leading academics and form meaningful relationships with one another – learning from each other’s divergent views and experiences. They will put their learning into action through a personal leadership project, intended to create positive impact by solving a problem or pressing issue in their community, organization, country, or the world.
