Governor Walz Orders Flags at Half-Staff to Honor Minnesota Firefighter Andrew Karels
Governor Tim Walz has ordered all United States and Minnesota flags to fly at half-staff at all state buildings in the State of Minnesota from sunrise on Saturday, June 7, 2025, to sunset on Monday, June 9, 2025, in honor and remembrance of Amboy Fire Department firefighter Andrew Karels. Firefighter Karels, who served as the Amboy Fire Department's medical officer, died on June 2, 2025.
*“Firefighter Andrew Karels was a steadfast leader for the Amboy Fire Department,” *said Governor Walz.* “His commitment to delivering exceptional care in emergency situations – always with compassion and professionalism – touched countless peoples’ lives during their most challenging moments. We mourn this sudden and tragic loss, and I extend my deepest condolences to Firefighter Karels’ family, colleagues, and all who knew and loved him.”*

Flags at Half-Staff
"In keeping with appropriate flag etiquette and U.S. Code, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz may order the state flag to be flown at half-staff under very limited circumstances. He may also order the national flag to be flown at half-staff on state property only. A state flag on state property is required by law to be flown at half-staff if the national flag is flown at half-staff."
