Dear john,

Today is Wear Orange Day, and June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month. During this observation, gun violence prevention advocates wear orange just as hunters wear for safety and protection. We wear orange to raise awareness and work to put a stop to over 100 gun deaths in America every day. I wear orange in memory of my son Jordan. In Washington this week, I was honored to join several of my colleagues who shared why they wear orange. Continue reading below for information on ways you can engage with my office during Gun Violence Awareness Month—together, we can make meaningful progress to stopping these senseless tragedies.

Rep. McBath stands with Rep. Mike Thompson of California. Rep. McBath is wearing an orange dress, and Rep. Thompson is wearing an orange ribbon.

While today is Wear Orange Day, my office is working all month long to raise the profile of gun violence prevention efforts, especially right here at home. On Wednesday, June 18th, I will be convening a panel discussion with local policymakers, health care professionals, and community advocates who work in violence intervention to discuss the state of gun violence prevention work at home and across the country, and you are invited to join us. This event will be an excellent opportunity to hear from some of the leading experts in gun violence prevention and community safety, and I hope you will take part in the conversation. To receive information about this discussion, please RSVP on our Eventbrite page.

Congress was in session this week, and I took part in several important hearings focused on the dangerous budget cuts proposed by the Trump Administration. On Wednesday, I challenged Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon regarding her decision to cancel the Charting My Path for Student Success program, which serves students with disabilities and their families. We owe it to every student to ensure they have the tools to meet their goals and be set up for success. Below, you can also view Secretary McMahon's disturbing refusal to admit that gun violence is the leading cause of death for children below the age of 18. Gun violence is a public health crisis, and our students deserve better.

The post reads "@RepLucyMcBath to @EDSecMcMahon on gun violence in schools: "There's something very wrong when the highest ranking members of government officials responsible for the education and safety of our kids cannot claim that the leading cause of death among children is not a crisis."

Congress is back in session next week, but my office will host another Mobile Office Hours in Vinings (4290 Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta, GA 30339). On Wednesday, June 11th, representatives from my staff will be at the Vinings Library from 12 until 2 pm to assist you with your federal concerns. If you need help with any federal issue, please use this link to sign up for an appointment. We look forward to assisting you!
