In response to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Riah Milton, Dominique "Rem'mie" Fells, Rayshard Brooks, Ahmaud Arbery, Robert Fuller, Malcolm Harsch, Oluwatoyin Salau, and countless other Black people who have been killed at the hands of vigilanties or law enforcement, millions have taken to the streets with a clear and distinct call to end police violence and to defund police.
Amazon Watch recognizes that the fight to protect our planet is inherently tied to the fight against systemic racism. That's why we're listening to Black leadership and joining the call to further amplify the demands from the Black Lives Matter movement.
Due to the legacy of slavery and systemic oppression, combined with COVID-19 and four years of Trumpism, Black communities are renewing their demands for justice, accountability, divestment from policing, and investment in healthy, sustainable communities. These demands are our demands, too, because systems of oppression and exploitation are interconnected: the same forces that prioritize corporate property and white comfort over Black lives prioritize profit over forests and indigenous peoples’ sovereignty.
Juneteenth or Freedom Day is celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of the last enslaved people of African ancestry in the United States. To honor Black ancestors and to lay a path to freedom for future generations, we are joining the SIX NINETEEN mobilization on Juneteenth weekend, June 19–21, 2020. You can join us at home, in your community, or in Washington, D.C.
Join us to demand:
- Defunding the police
- Investment in Black communities
- Resignation of Donald Trump
If you are unable to be present for actions in your community, you can still show your support by donating to the Movement for Black Lives today! Donations make sure organizers have the supplies they need to make this mobilization a success.
