Hey Indivisibles,

The morning after House Republicans passed their Medicaid-slashing
megabill, we wrote that Speaker Johnson’s wheeling, dealing, dead-of-night
approach to ramming it through could still implode -- and that our fight
was just starting.

Welp, it’s been a promising week for that prediction and a pretty lousy
one for Congressional Republicans. A series of new setbacks has their
reconciliation bill at risk of coming off the rails:

 1. [ [link removed] ]The Congressional Budget Office says the bill would add $2.4
trillion to the national debt. That’s certain to set off a clash
between the “fiscal hawks” on the far right -- who want even bigger
SNAP and Medicaid cuts to lower the budget deficit -- and battleground
Republicans scared to be seen slashing benefits even further. Those
sides are still miles apart, and neither seems willing to deal right
now.
 2. [ [link removed] ]Elon Musk has spent hours a day attacking the bill and urging
(bullying?) members of Congress to kill it. The attacks have led to a
widening rift between Trump and his largest donor (so sad), and some
in MAGA-land are taking Musk's side.
 3. [ [link removed] ]The "SALT deal” could die in the Senate. Speaker Johnson granted a
sweetheart deal on state and local taxes (“SALT”) that was absolutely
critical to winning over reluctant blue-state Republicans -- but key
senators hate it. If that deal gets nixed, Republicans from
California, New York, and other blue states have little reason to vote
for the final version of the bill.
 4. [ [link removed] ]Multiple House Republicans have admitted they regret their vote --
[ [link removed] ]even Marjorie Taylor Greene! The House’s bill was a rush-job rammed
through in the dead of night, and most Republicans frankly had no idea
what they were voting for. But as donors, press, and constituents take
them to task, some lawmakers are backpedaling -- and may even withhold
their vote when the bill comes back to the House.

We’re not telling you this to gloat or declare victory -- far from it.
Congressional Republicans have maneuvered out of tough jams before, and
they could do it again if we don’t keep applying constant and unyielding
political pressure.

But if you thought this bill was on cruise control to Donald Trump’s desk,
it’s time to get back in the fight.

The bill is now being rewritten in the Senate before heading back to the
House for a second vote. We’re focused on maximizing senators' changes and
delaying their process as much as we can -- because every change they
make, and every day they take, will make it that much harder for the bill
to pass both chambers.

[ [link removed] ]Please sign up for a phonebank to alert and mobilize voters in
battleground states against the megabill. Our phonebankers connect
constituents directly to their senators' offices so they can apply even
more pressure.

Anyone, in any state, can join a phonebank. You just need a phone and a
computer. Training and support are available.

And if you can’t join a phonebank, please [ [link removed] ]consider a donation to fund
outreach, organizing, and even billboards to hold Republican senators
accountable.

Thanks for everything you do. It could save healthcare and vital support
for millions.

In solidarity,
