Every year in the first week of June, organisations around the UK celebrate Volunteers’ Week, and it provides us an opportunity to say thank you and recognise the time shared by our wonderful volunteers across the city. I’d like to say a huge thank you to the 9000 Clean Champion volunteers across Nottingham City who work so hard to keep our city clean and tidy by litter picking and reporting waste issues. Some of these incredible volunteers are dedicating their time, care, and effort to our wonderful city every single week, and we want you to know how much we appreciate you. You make a real difference, and Nottingham is a better, brighter place because of you – thank you for everything you do.

June marks the start of Pride Month – a time to celebrate love, identity, equality and the contributions of LGBTQ+ communities across our city and beyond. Nottingham is proud to be a diverse, inclusive city where everyone should feel safe, seen, and supported to be their authentic selves.

As part of the Love your City Centre campaign, I was pleased to join a Day of Action in Hockley on Thursday, working with local businesses and other relevant partners to address rough sleeping, litter, and fly tipping. Framework were engaging with rough sleepers early in the morning, Neighbourhood Safety Officers carried out littering operations throughout the day and a multi-agency litter pick was arranged by It’s in Nottingham which was attended by various local businesses, and Nottingham Trent University. There was much more happening throughout the day with dedicated partners working hard throughout the rain. Well done to everyone involved. Only working together can we bring about change!

Next week, England will welcome Senegal to the world-famous City Ground for the first Three Lions fixture held on Trentside in 84 years. This is hugely exciting for Nottingham, and I look forward to cheering on the Three Lions at the City Ground on Tuesday.

Finally, today marks the Islamic festival of Eid Al-Adha. It's a time of reflection, sacrifice, compassion and community.  This city is home to a diverse and inclusive community, and I hope this special time brings peace, happiness, and prosperity to all. Eid Al Adha Mubarak!

£2 billion for transport improvements across our region

Yesterday we saw the announcement that the East Midlands will receive £2 billion of funding. Nottingham will benefit from funding towards sustainable public transport and improved rail, road and bus connections between Derby and Nottingham.

Cllr Neghat Khan said: “The announcement that the East Midlands is to receive £2 billion from the Government’s Transport for City Regions Fund is a huge vote of confidence in the region, and a direct result of having Claire Ward in post as Mayor for the last year working on our behalf.

The East Midlands has historically seen less funding than other areas, so it is great to see the region benefiting and the Mayor empowering our region.

“A key element of the funding will support major improvements to sustainable public transport links between Nottingham and Derby as part of the Trent Arc corridor which I joined key partners to promote as a key growth zone for the East Midlands at the recent UKREiiF national development and investment event.”

Hockley Day of Action

This week, partners across Nottingham came together for a focused Day of Action in Hockley, aimed at making our city centre safer, cleaner, and more welcoming. With support from Nottinghamshire Police, local businesses, universities, councillors and frontline teams, the initiative addressed issues like begging and antisocial behaviour, street cleanliness, licence enforcement, and knife crime and drug activity.

This is just the beginning – we’re committed to building on this momentum to protect and enhance one of Nottingham’s most vibrant areas.

Brand new bridge takes shape

Our new bridge across the River Trent is taking shape! 🌉

Over recent weeks, the residents and commuters of Hucknall have noticed something new taking shape on the horizon – Nottingham’s brand-new walking and cycling bridge is being fabricated using British Steel, just a few miles from its eventual home - at Briton Fabricators in Hucknall.

By the end of this month, the steel superstructure will be dismantled and taken for a coat of protective paint and non slip decking to be added, before it arrives on site at Trent Basin in August to be re-built.

Blue badge 2
Vehicle seized as council clamps down on blue-badge misuse

A car was towed away and more than 30 people were fined as part of a crackdown in Nottingham on the misuse of blue badges.

Nottingham City Council officers took part in the National Blue Badge Day of Action 2025  [ [link removed] ]on 30 May, which aims to raise public awareness about the effect it has on disabled people.

Close to 300 checks were carried out over the course of the day, which identified six invalid or expired blue badges, which were confiscated; six penalty charge notices (PCN) issued for misuse; 25 additional PCNs issued for parking in a disabled bay without a valid badge; and one vehicle removed and impounded.

Nottingham Motor Show

The Nottingham Motor Show will include hundreds of classic vehicles as well as the very latest models that car dealerships have to offer. Nottys new hat

Over the past few weeks, Active Nottingham celebrated the launch of their second children's book, *Notty's New Hat*, with three amazing ‘Read and Swim’ events at Clifton, Ken Martin, and Djanogly Community Leisure Centre. These events were filled with fun activities, including swimming sessions and interactive readings, and some children even met Notty the Otter!

A special highlight was the appearance of Nottingham-raised actress *Shauna Shim*, known for her roles in CBeebies Storytime and Waterloo Road, who delighted the children with her engaging reading of the new book at Ken Martin Leisure Centre.
