She was ripped from my arms and forced to live under Saddam Hussein’s brutal regime. For nearly four years, I didn’t know if I’d ever see her again.

When Alea finally came home at age 11, she was behind in school and spoke broken English — but her spirit was stronger than ever. She knew what it meant to lose freedom and she knew she wanted to protect it for others.

After 9/11, while other high school juniors were planning for prom, Alea was making plans to protect the country that gave her a second chance.

Soon after graduating, she walked into an Air Force recruiting office and said: “Give me the job that deploys the most.”

She has served our country for 21 years — in active duty and the Reserves. Today, she’s a Lieutenant Colonel who’s advised at the Pentagon, the White House and deployed to the Middle East. Now, she’s answering a new call: running for Congress to serve the people of northwest Ohio.
