Dear John,
Today, on Marian Wright Edelman’s birthday, we pause to honor the woman whose vision and voice sparked a movement. Through Children’s Defense Fund (CDF), she gave us all a charge to keep.
As CDF’s founder and president emerita, Mrs. Edelman has been a moral compass for this nation. She reminds us that “service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life.” Her commitment to justice, her faith in children, and her refusal to settle for anything less than Beloved Community still shape everything we do.
This Founder’s Day, we are not just looking back. We are leaning in.
We still believe that every young person deserves to grow up with dignity, hope, and joy. We still believe we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
And we still believe in Mrs. Edelman’s charge:
“If you don’t like the way the world is, you change it. You have an obligation to change it. You just do it one step at a time.”
One step at a time, together, we are keeping that charge.
Will you take the next step with us?
