Warm welcome for football heroes after historic Wembley win
A special reception was held for our footballing royalty following their triumphant day at Wembley Stadium.
Owner Frank Rothwell and his family, club captain Tom Conlon, striker Mike Fondop, manager Micky Mellon, and CEO Darren Royle were all honoured at a special reception held at the Civic Centre. The event celebrated their thrilling 3-2 victory over Southend United — a historic result that marked the club’s return to the English Football League.
The team was met with congratulations and heartfelt praise from Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah, Chief Executive Shelley Kipling, the Mayor of Oldham Cllr Eddie Moores and Mayoress Kath Moores, and MP Jim McMahon. Each expressed their gratitude for the pride the team has brought to the borough.
Setting the tone for the festivities, the Oldham Music Centre Youth Brass Band played them in with a lively rendition of Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up — a tribute to the club’s fighting spirit and perseverance.
Congratulations once again to the team — Oldham is so proud of you!

Driving a better public transport system for the people of Oldham
Oldham Council leader Councillor Arooj Shah, met with Chancellor Rachel Reeves as the government announced huge investment in public transport, including great news for Oldham.
Cllr Shah said: “This funding boost is massively welcome, it’ll drive a better connected, more affordable and sustainable public transport system for Oldhamers all the while helping to break down barriers to jobs and opportunities whilst making Oldham the greenest borough in Greater Manchester. “The projects the Government has backed today, including the new tram stop at Cop Road, can give our residents in Royton, Shaw and Sholver the confidence that our plans to build more homes and create more jobs are not in isolation, there is infrastructure to support our growth coming too. “In ten years’ time public transport in Greater Manchester will look nothing like it does today because of the Chancellor's announcement, bringing rail into the Bee Network alone will make it easier for our residents to access jobs across the city region, but it’s vital that Oldham gets its fair share of that investment too.
"We’ve fought hard to make sure our borough isn’t left behind, and today’s announcement shows that’s paying off. “We're already benefitting from the Bee Network, and soon we'll have even more integration making it easier to get to where you need to go."
She added: "We’re building a town that’s greener, better connected, and ready for the future – and we won’t stop here. We’ll keep pushing for the investment, infrastructure and opportunities our residents deserve.”

Update on Oldham Coliseum reopening
The historic home of Oldham Coliseum Theatre will now reopen in 2026, it has been announced.
The decision was made after initial construction work revealed that more time would be needed to ensure that the building is properly ready to welcome back audiences.
Working closely with contractors Tilbury Douglas, plans are progressing to ensure the new Coliseum is everything it should be and more for audiences when it reopens next year.
Oldham actor Julie Hesmondhalgh, a leading member of the Friends of Oldham Coliseum, said: “The Friends of the Coliseum are relieved and happy that plans to mount the Coli panto this year have been put on hold. Better to return with a beautiful, bold and glittering bang than do something half-baked in a building that isn’t yet ready."
She added: “We are grateful as ever to Oldham Council for listening to the experts in the field.”
