The Washington Post:
NOAA scrambles to fill forecasting jobs as hurricane season looms
“The agency acknowledged ‘urgent action is needed to sustain mission-critical operations,’ as peak severe weather and hurricane season approach.”
After laying off more than 800 workers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in February, the Trump Administration is now trying to reverse course.
The consequences of Trump’s cuts to the National Weather Service (NWS) are all too clear as we enter hurricane and wildfire seasons that are already predicted to be more severe than normal.
Without weather researchers, maritime professionals, and other crucial safety roles throughout NOAA, our safety and economy are at risk.
Maria is once again calling on the Trump Administration to exempt NWS workers from its hiring freeze and protect the critical services NOAA provides. Are you with her? Add your name right away: [[link removed]]PROTECT NOAA [[link removed]]
Yesterday, Maria joined top meteorologists to further highlight the devastating impacts of cuts to NWS and NOAA and keep up the public pressure on the Trump Administration.
“NOAA has been transparent that they can't keep up. They have said that they can't keep the lights on in a number of forecast offices. The Department of Commerce needs to be clear to the American people that the staffing shortages will impact our ability to compute that science [and] get those wildfire crews and emergency response where they need to go.”
– Sen. Maria Cantwell
There was a common thread among the concerns expressed by each meteorologist: these staffing shortages and budget cuts are unprecedented, and already hindering the NWS’ critical safety operations and forecasting.
Add your name to our petition immediately and tell the Trump Administration to restore and protect the National Weather Service before our communities suffer the consequences. → [[link removed]]
Thanks for amplifying this urgent call to action.
