If Trump’s judicial nominees are confirmed, they will have an impact on our rights long after Trump is out of office.
John,
This week, the Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings for Donald Trump’s first slate of judicial nominees since returning to office, and we’ve noticed a troubling pattern: they have extreme anti-abortion records.
Let’s take a closer look at a few of his worst picks…
JOSHUA DIVINE - Nominee to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri and Western District of Missouri
- Serves as the current solicitor general of Missouri.
- Representing the state in Missouri v. FDA, which is challenging the legal status of mifepristone, a drug used in abortion care.
- Led the legal challenge against a winning ballot measure that enshrined reproductive rights into the state constitution.
MARIA LANAHAN – Nominee to U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri
- Serves as deputy solicitor general of Missouri under Joshua Divine and defended the same anti-abortion policies that he did.
- Spread misinformation about the safety of mifepristone.
- Argued Missouri didn’t have to pay Planned Parenthood's legal fees after they tried and failed to restrict their abortion provider license.
WHITNEY HERMANDORFER – Nominee to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
- Serves as director of strategic litigation for the Tennessee Attorney General.
- Served as lead counsel in a case defending Tennessee’s near-total abortion ban.
- Challenged a rule that Title X funding recipients must give information about where to get an abortion if requested by the patient.
These are the people Trump wants to serve lifetime appointments on our federal courts. Make no mistake: if they are confirmed, they will continue to work to rip away reproductive rights, and more, long after Trump is out of office.
We must resist all of Trump’s judicial nominations. We must mobilize to let our elected officials know we demand better. We must fight back.
