Senate Democrats have passed an important milestone in the struggle for civil rights.
After Senators Warren, Hirono, and Duckworth called on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to act to quell the spike in anti-Asian American racism, the Commission did just that -- voting unanimously to address xenophobia and issue guidance on how to prevent it.
It marks the first effort of its kind within the federal government during the crisis. Under Trump, action against racism has been much slower than under past presidents -- with the Center for Public Integrity reporting that, “The federal government’s response amid the coronavirus pales in comparison to actions taken during the SARS outbreak and after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.”
At least Senate Democrats are standing up for vulnerable Americans in their time of need. But should they have to go it alone? Tell us if you think our president should lead by example:
