Dear John,
Forty years ago, I walked the halls of Congress with survivors and advocates talking with lawmakers about the importance of funding domestic violence and sexual assault shelters and programs.
Congress listened and passed the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA) and then, later, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). This meant the full force of our federal government was behind efforts to help survivors and stop domestic violence and sexual assault. And it worked! Domestic violence against adult women declined by more than 60 percent since then.
Today that funding is under threat and we need your help.
June 5th is a National Day of Action to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect and increase federal funding for services for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors.
Federal grants that go to programs that respond to domestic violence and sexual assault are essential. This infrastructure supports more than five million adult and child survivors annually — providing emergency shelter, legal advocacy, trauma counseling, and other lifesaving services.

Then, join us to tell Congress: we won't go back to a time when there were no support services for survivors and children, when there was no one to call for help, when the infrastructure to end and respond to violence didn’t exist.
