Dear Friend,

House Republicans have passed a budget that will make the largest cuts to Medicaid in the program's history.

This isn’t just numbers on a page. It’s a direct attack on the health care that 1.6 million Louisianians rely on—including children, new moms, working adults with disabilities, and seniors in nursing homes.

Republicans claim they’re cutting Medicaid to root out “waste, fraud, and abuse.” If that’s really the goal, they shouldn’t have had a problem with my amendment that would ensure 100% of any savings go right back into Medicaid to help our most vulnerable populations. But they voted it down because this isn’t about efficiency. It’s about gutting a program that working families depend on.

Over the next 10 years, their budget would slash $928 billion from the part of the federal budget that includes Medicaid. And according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, there’s no way to make those cuts without directly harming people.

Let me be clear about what that means in Louisiana:

  • Medicaid covers 53.9% of all children in our state
  • 64% of moms and their newborns rely on it for care
  • 53.5% of working-age adults with disabilities depend on it
  • 74% of people in nursing homes receive their care through Medicaid

If these proposal passes, Louisiana could be forced to take coverage away from:

  • Kids with disabilities
  • New moms and their babies
  • Seniors and adults with disabilities who need long-term care
  • Cancer patients without other options

Republicans are fighting for Trump’s tax cuts that will benefit ultra wealthy at a cost of $5.5 trillion. That’s less money for health care, and more tax breaks for billionaires.

I don’t agree with Trump on much, but when he recently said, “Don’t f* with Medicaid,” I hope he meant it. I don’t think he did. But Democrats do, and we’re fighting like hell to protect it.

This is not a game. It’s not an abstract policy. It’s real people’s lives. And I’ll keep standing up to protect Medicaid and the millions of Louisianians who depend on it.
