15-year-old boy dies following parking lot car crash at private school in Studio City, LAPD says
A young student was crushed between two vehicles and killed, and several other students were hurt in a sudden crash on campus at a Studio City private K-12 school on Wednesday. The incident happened shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday in the carpool line of the Campbell Hall School parking lot, located at 4533 Laurel Canyon Boulevard, according to school officials. It all unfolded as parents, friends, and siblings were picking students up from school. Sources say the driver of a green Rivian SUV was in the carpool lane in the back parking lot of the school, picking up her younger sister, who is a student. The Rivian driver reportedly rear-ended the SUV in front of her, just as the 15-year-old boy was walking past, pinning him between the two SUVs. "They believe he was walking in between cars, and they believe he may have had a car at the scene that he was going to get into," said Lt. Matthew Bielski with Los Angeles Police Department. The incident, which investigators are calling a tragic accident, happened in front of students and staff just as the school was letting out.

Another LA jewelry shop burglarized with thieves appearing to use similar tactics from other break-ins
A jewelry store in the San Fernando Valley was burglarized as thieves made their way in through a vacant building next door before cutting through safes, sparking concerns whether criminals are using similar tactics to break into small businesses in recent weeks. The latest burglary happened at Afghan Lapis Jewelry on Ventura Boulevard in Encino on Monday after suspects got in by an adjacent vacation building and broke through a wall. The burglars cut open the two safes inside the family-owned business with a blowtorch while ripping off the alarm from the wall, the owner’s brother told NBC Los Angeles. “Somebody has worked hard for 43 years. To build something, and leave everything here for somebody to come in and take everything overnight,” said Amin Nassiri, adding his brother has to cope with the devastating news while recovering from a major surgery. “The store had many break-ins, but this is the first time he lost everything 100%.” While the business owner does not have an estimate on the amount of stolen merchandise, the family believes the losses are in the hundreds of thousands.

Sheriff’s deputies flee moving truck as man hijacks department vehicle in downtown L.A.
A man carjacked an L.A. County Sheriff’s Department bucket truck early Wednesday morning while a sheriff’s deputy was precariously positioned high above the ground in the bucket, authorities said. The suspect conducted a takeover of a 2011 White Ford F550 utility bucket truck on the corner of Spring and Temple streets around 5 a.m. while two deputies were in the vehicle, according to a department bulletin. A deputy received minor injuries during a struggle with the suspect and was treated at a local hospital, according to a department statement. A bucket truck, also known as a cherry picker, is a vehicle equipped with a hydraulic lift system and an extendable arm that ends in a bucket where a person can stand. It’s used to lift workers to hard-to-reach areas. Two undercover deputies were using the truck to remove concealed cameras when a man believed to be in his 20s jumped into the vehicle, said he had to go to the hospital and began to drive away, law enforcement sources told The Times. When the carjacking took place, one of the deputies was elevated in the bucket.

Former LA County retirement system employee charged with grand theft
The former interim chief security officer for the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association has been charged with allegedly using his position to secure $120,000 worth of contracts for his company. Carmelo Marquez, 42, faces three counts of conflict of interest, two counts of perjury and one count of grand theft. The LA County District Attorney's Office said he made $19,904 from the contracts. If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum of six years and eight months in state prison. "Public service is meant to be a position of trust, not a way for people to enrich themselves through fraudulent actions," District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. "This is an example of why government employees must sign disclosure forms from the California Fair Political Practices Commission so there is full transparency." Prosecutors said Marquez initially worked as an independent contractor for LACERA before being named the association's interim chief security officer in February 2023. He allegedly failed to disclose that he had a business that sold software products and provided technical support for the county retirement agency.
