Hello Friends,
May was a busy month fighting for New Jersey families in Washington, from standing up against House Republicans’ attempts to slash Medicaid and SNAP to defending New Jersey against dangerous actions from the Trump Administration. I want to share a little more about what I have been up to.
I fought against Washington Republicans’ reckless and cruel budget plan that would hurt hardworking families across New Jersey. The plan includes over $700 billion in cuts to Medicaid, which provides health coverage for nearly 2 million New Jerseyans. Under this legislation, as many as 350,000 New Jerseyans would lose their health insurance through Medicaid. It also includes deep cuts to critical food assistance programs like SNAP, which approximately 800,000 New Jerseyans rely on, and eliminates funding for energy programs that help lower energy costs. At the same time, it hands out massive tax breaks to billionaires like Elon Musk, adding trillions to the national debt. This budget isn’t about responsible spending — it’s about prioritizing the wealthy at the expense of working families.
Last month, I introduced two pieces of legislation aimed at protecting New Jerseyans. The Protecting Retirement and Health Benefits for Working Families Act would safeguard Social Security, Medicaid, and other critical programs from being slashed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). And with the PROTECT Firefighters Act, I’m working to expand access to lifesaving equipment and training for our emergency responders — the brave men and women who keep us safe every day.
Further, I am demanding immediate federal action from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau demanding immediate federal action to address the chronic staffing shortages and outdated technology plaguing the air traffic control system. The recent 90-second outage at Newark Liberty International Airport caused widespread delays and cancellations that continue to disrupt travel, and the reliance on aging infrastructure, like copper wiring-based communications networks, and insufficient personnel is unacceptable for any airport, especially a major hub like Newark. I’m committed to securing the investments and the reforms necessary to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient air travel for everyone in our community.
Following the shocking, antisemitic murders of two Israeli Embassy staff members outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., I called on the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department to dedicate more resources to protecting Jewish communities, houses of worship, and nonprofit organizations from antisemitic violence. This shooting, along with other recent antisemitic violence, including the horrific terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado, the arson attack on Governor Shapiro’s home, and attacks on synagogues in my district, underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive federal response.
And finally, I was proud to stand with Mayor Conley and Madison Borough as we cut the ribbon for The Forum, an affordable housing development with first-of-its-kind energy-efficient technology. I secured over $2 million in federal Community Project Funding for this project, and I’m thrilled to see the residents finally able to move in and call this place home.
