Team, Trump is once again acting like a dictator.

Harvard University is a critical piece of Massachusetts’s leadership in education and an important contributor to our economy through jobs, lifesaving research, technology, and more. Trump wants to destroy that because of his own personal pettiness.

In case you haven’t been following, here’s a quick breakdown:

First: When Trump demanded that Harvard make politically-motivated policy changes at his personal direction, the school refused to comply.

Trump’s administration responded by freezing billions in crucial research grants and asking the IRS to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status.

Harvard still refused to comply.

Then: Trump directed almost every federal agency, from the Department of Education to the National Science Foundation, to cancel all funding to Harvard. Funding that makes their lifesaving research possible.

But Harvard still refused to comply.

Now: The Trump administration is weaponizing the immigration system to continue its attack. They’ve moved to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll international students, who make up over a quarter of all students at the university. Homeland Security has even asked for a list of names and home countries of all current international students.

But even still, Harvard is standing firm. And none of us — Harvard or any institution — should bend the knee when Trump acts like a dictator.

You see, authoritarians like Trump go after educational institutions because they stand for the values that authoritarians hate: Free speech, free expression, the pursuit of truth, and the sharing of ideas.

But Massachusetts won’t be bullied.

I’m committed to doing everything I can in the Senate to oppose Trump’s attacks on higher education and focus on the issues that really matter to Americans.

If you want to have my back in this fight, please take just 30 seconds today and sign my petition calling on the Trump administration to keep their hands off Harvard and other schools that refuse to do Trump’s bidding. Your signature helps us keep up the pressure and show that Americans will not stand for attacks on education.

ADD YOUR NAME

I understand the important role that Harvard and other colleges play in the vibrancy of our economy, culture, and more.

I will continue to support them in their fight against Trump’s education crackdown. I hope you will too.

In solidarity,

Ed Markey
