Come All Ye Faithful

What to Know: Faith leaders and elected officials gathered recently for an event called Prayer, Reconciliation and a Call for Criminal Justice Reform as protests over police brutality continue to occur nationwide.

The TPPF Take: Involving faith leaders in the discussion about policing and race is necessary.

“Faith leaders have a standing with both sides of the protests – with the aggrieved men and women, youths and senior citizens, as well as with our municipal officials who are the gatekeepers for change,” said TPPF’s Dr. Richard Johnson. “If we wish to rebuild trust between minority communities, the police and our justice system as a whole, our faith leaders need a seat at the table too.”

Liberty and Justice For All

What to Know: As the “defund the police” movement continues to gain momentum, some have stood up to criticize the movement including Rep. Karen Bass, the chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The TPPF Take: This week, TPPF hosted the virtual event Productive Policing: Solutions to Build Trust and Keep Communities Safe.

“I am hopeful we can get beyond this reactionary and extreme suggestion and talk specifically about good policing reforms,” said TPPF’s Randy Petersen. “These will allow communities to make sure that well-trained, courageous and capable officers are surrounded by others just like them.”

The State of Black America

The State of Black America

What to Know: Michael Radden, a Black business owner in Arizona, is using his restaurant as a place for people to gather and discuss race and community.

The TPPF Take: To support these conversations, TPPF released a new, limited series podcast called The State of Black Texas.

“It is important to understand how we got here but it is equally as important if not more so to forge a path forward for where we go from here,” said TPPF’s Dr. Richard Johnson. “In the new podcast The State of Black Texas, I sit down with Black leaders to discuss challenges and policy opportunities that will shape the future.”
