John,

As we celebrate Pride Month, I want to take a moment to reflect—not only as chair of the Minnesota DFL, but as someone whose life and work have been deeply shaped by the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

I know firsthand how personal this is. My proudest moment didn’t happen on a campaign stage or even on Election Day. It was when I married my husband, Justin, in a church in St. Paul, surrounded by our family and friends.

Two years earlier, in 2011, I was asked to lead Minnesotans United for All Families, the campaign to defeat a constitutional amendment that would have restricted the freedom to marry in our state. At the time, many thought it couldn’t be done. But Minnesotans proved otherwise.

We built one of the largest grassroots movements in Minnesota history. We knocked on doors, had heartfelt conversations with neighbors, and formed a coalition that stretched across religious, racial, and geographic lines.

And we won. Minnesota became the first state in the country to defeat such an amendment at the ballot box. Just six months later, we secured marriage equality through the legislature.

But the fight isn’t over. Donald Trump and his MAGA allies are once again threatening our fundamental freedoms. They’re working to roll back our rights and erase our stories. In fact, fewer Republicans support marriage equality today than in 2016.

In the face of these challenges, we must recommit ourselves to building a state—and a country—where everyone can live freely and authentically, no matter who they are or who they love.

The DFL coalition will always stand with our LGBTQ+ community—during Pride and every day after.

If you believe everyone deserves to live with dignity and freedom, please consider making a contribution today. Your support will help us organize in every region of the state, defend hard-won rights, and elect leaders who will stand up for LGBTQ+ Minnesotans.

Happy Pride! 🌈
