HURTING NOT HELPING

Online Learning Is Failing My Kids

To employ an overused phrase: recent events have been unchartered territory for schools. When the stay-at-home orders were announced, schools had to move quickly to develop a system for teaching students from home. While parents are needed more than ever to help their child stay on course and meet deadlines, the online format can’t be accessed by parents. In order to see what a child is doing, parents have to use the child’s computer and familiarize themselves with the various educational platforms (designed for schools) that are used by students. It’s a steep, sometimes impossible learning curve.

Our Anti-American Education System Made Riots Inevitable

Rioting social justice warriors are remaking the world as they see fit, consistent with what they’ve been taught from K-12 to the highest echelons of learning. Two thirds of millennials believe that America is a racist and sexist country, and close to 40% think the United States is “among the most unequal societies in the world.” At the heart of the unrest is the belief that the United States is a uniquely bad country, instead of an exceptionally free, prosperous, and powerful one.

CAPSULE REVIEW

Don’t Defund Police, Reform Police Unions

A once radical movement to “defund the police” has gained traction and mainstream respectability, and some politicians are all too eager to act. In Minneapolis, where the killing of George Floyd by a police officer sparked nationwide unrest, officials announced that they plan a vote on whether to dismantle that city’s force. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced he wants to shift resources from the NYPD to social services. And, in a stunning about-face, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti scrapped plans to request a police budget hike, instead calling for cuts so that the city can invest more in “people who have been left behind.”

There's a Housing Crisis on the Horizon

The coronavirus pandemic has sparked a variety of resulting crises. Next up: a housing crisis as stimulus checks run out before income is restored for many Americans. Nationwide, 1.5 million to 2 million homeowners could lose their homes to foreclosure due to the pandemic. So, what can policymakers do to mitigate this crisis? The first priority should be getting Americans back to work. Instead of such broad and sweeping legislation, lawmakers should focus on targeted assistance, helping those Americans who really don’t know how they will pay their rent, while at the same time not hurting landlords as well.

We Want the Green Energy Sector to Flourish Too

Republicans are right to want to avoid embracing Green New Deal-style regulations that would make it harder to get the economy back up and running, but they shouldn’t overlook how the energy sector–including clean energy producers–plays an important role in making our economy work. In fact, green energy is a fast-growing market with incredible potential and importance. Instead of writing off any policy proposals that support the green energy sector, we should be sure to carefully examine any policy proposals that can help our economy and our environment.
