The name “George Floyd” is now attached to a movement, one centered on that man’s death at the hands of police. But there are other names—some you know well, some you may faintly remember, and some you may never have heard—that are violent, explosive points on a long continuum of repression and control by the American criminal justice system. Disproportionate policing and incarceration can be quantified. An audit by the Aspen Institute Criminal Justice Reform Initiative seeks to present a clear and complete picture of realities that are too often horrific and nameless. |

Another Kind of Restaurant Guide
Food & Society Program
Restaurants looking to open safely have very little official guidance. Regulations on reopening lay over the US like a checkered tablecloth. The Food & Society Program pulled together restaurateurs, public health experts, philanthropists, and (importantly) epidemiologists to create Safety First: Serving Food and Protecting People During Covid-19. Designed for back-of-house operations, the guide will soon extend to delivery and dining rooms, helping an ailing industry open without jeopardizing the health of employees or guests.

Listen as Ann-Gel Palermo—an East Harlem resident, an associate professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and an Aspen Institute Health Innovators fellow—discusses preparing for disaster.

In a new interview with Olga Khazan of The Atlantic, Murthy discusses his book Together—which deals with the impacts of loneliness and the importance of human connection—in the context of COVID-19.
