Texas lawmakers recently passed Senate Bill 12 (SB 12), a new law that will bring significant changes to K-12 public and charter education across the state.The Governor is expected to sign it into law, with implementation beginning in the 2025-2026 school year.

Key provisions of SB 12 include:

- Sex Education: Reinstates opt-in requirements in perpetuity, prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity, and extends these rules to charter schools and districts of innovation. 

-Parental Access & Consent: Expands parent access to student records and requires written consent for participation in school clubs, surveys. and certain student services. 

-DEI Restrictions: Prohibits diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in public and charter schools.

UTHealth Houston School of Public Health is launching a study this fall to evaluate how effective iCHAMPSS is in helping schools adopt and sustain evidence-based human sexuality and responsibility instruction. 

What is iCHAMPSS?

iCHAMPSS is a free, online tool that helps schools adopt and maintain sexual health programs. It offers more than 60 resources, such as guides, tips, and templates, to make the process easier for schools.

How does the study work?

Participating school districts will be randomly assigned to start using iCHAMPSS in either the Fall or Spring during the first two years of the study (2025-2026 and 2026-2027). All districts will have iCHAMPSS by the end of the second year.

A District Coordinator, identified by the district, will be asked to complete confidential surveys: one at the start of year and a follow-up survey at the end of each semester. Each survey will take about 15-20 minutes and can be completed at your convenience on any device with internet access. 

Participants will receive $25 in compensation for each completed survey or interview.
