June 5, 2025

Dear John

For more than 50 years, June 5 has been recognized as World Environment Day, a time for people across the globe to come together in shared support of the planet’s ecosystem.

At the Migration Policy Institute, we are working hard to understand how environmental change intersects with other factors to drive, prevent, or otherwise change people’s movement.

In the most recent episode of our popular podcast “Changing Climate, Changing Migration,” we spoke with researcher John Aoga about using AI to measure the effect of weather events on migration intentions in West Africa. He discusses his findings as well as a broader and potentially just as pressing question: Can AI predict climate migration?

Can AI Predict Climate Migration?

This Environment Day, make sure to subscribe to “Changing Climate, Changing Migration” on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever else you get your podcasts. We have got a lot more conversation in store, and you will not want to miss it.

Changing Climate, Changing Migration

We at MPI see climate-linked migration as a key part of our work.

Our Migration Information Source magazine has an ongoing special issue with more than a dozen articles from a slew of top experts, examining different aspects of this complex phenomenon:
