                                      WHAT'S HAPPENING
NEW MEXICO SUPREME COURT RULES AGAINST OPENING SPECIAL SESSION TO PUBLIC

The state's highest court has ruled that the public may be banned from entering the Roundhouse when the Special Session opens tomorrow. A group of lawmakers had petitioned the Court after the Legislative Council Interim Committee voted to close the doors to constituents because of COVID-19, allowing only lawmakers, staff and media inside the Capitol. This is politics at its worst, and the Court's decision violates the New Mexico Constitution, which calls for both chambers to be open the public. The decision comes as lawmakers are about to wrestle with its multi-billion dollar budget crisis. They may also take up police reform and election legislation, issues which affect all New Mexicans. There's no transparency here, and it's wrong to exclude the public from the legislative process.

ONE MAN SHOT AT ALBUQUERQUE PROTEST

Albuquerque police are investigating a shooting at a protest that left one man wounded. Authorities say demonstrators were trying to take down a sculpture of Juan de Oante in Old Town when the group clashed with a handful of New Mexico Civil Guard members. A man fired a shot and another was struck, sending him to the hospital. The shooter was arrested and charged. Peaceful protests are fine, but violence cannot be tolerated; it's still unclear what happened.  We must have law and order and respect peoples' rights.

The story from FOX News.

STATE LAWMAKERS BEING PAID WHILE AT HOME

The Democrat-led Legislative Council this past week gave the green light for state lawmakers to receive per diem payments while taking part in virtual sessions from home. The Council okayed lawmakers to get paid for pre-Special Session meetings and during the Session. This is an insult to constituents. The state is billions in the hole, but lawmakers will be paid for being at home. Per diem expenses are for food and lodging when lawmakers travel to the Roundhouse. They shouldn't be taking advantage of taxpayers like this.

GOVERNOR'S LATEST PUBLIC HEALTH ORDER CONTINUES TO SHOW UNFAIRNESS AND DISCRIMINATION

This past week Gov. Lujan Grisham decided that breweries could open at 50% capacity for outdoor seating. It boggles the mind how the chief executive's piecemeal approach to reopening the state is hurting New Mexico. These bit-by-bit decisions make no sense as businesses continue to collapse. So bars are still shut down, but breweries are opening? We need equity and common sense here. The governor's haphazard actions have led to the closings of hundreds of restaurants and other businesses around the state.

Here's the story from KRQE-TV.

MAN CHARGED IN VICTORIA MARTENS CASE VIOLATES CONDITION OF RELEASE

Fabian Gonzales, one of the suspects in a notorious Albuquerque murder, apparently violated a condition of his release. He was one of the suspects in the 2016 murder and dismemberment of 10 year-old Victoria Martens. It was reported that Gonzales was with his girlfriend and her children and was unsupervised with the children. One of his conditions of release is that he is not to have contact with anyone under 18 without supervision by another adult.

No surprise here. If we had tougher prosecutors and a more competent judicial system, Gonzales wouldn't have been released in the first place.

JUDICIAL CANDIDATE THOMAS MONTOYA WILL RECEIVE PUBLIC ELECTION FUNDS
The Committee to Elect Thomas Montoya wants to thank everyone who sent in $5 contributions in his bid to receive public funding. During the past two weeks his campaign received more than the number of contributions required. Montoya got the contributions, required by law, in record time. He will receive $188,000 in public funding to run his campaign. The veteran attorney is running for Court of Appeals, Position 3. Montoya's candidacy will mean conservative Republicans will be running for all three appellate seats.
