John,

The Texas Legislature just passed a bill requiring the Ten Commandments to
be displayed in public school classrooms.

Senate Bill 10 now heads to Greg Abbott’s desk, where he is expected to
sign it into law. At the start of the 2025-26 school year, our students
will be in classrooms that ignore the constitutional principle of
separation of church and state.

Texas public schools are already facing serious challenges — underfunded
and understaffed. But instead of addressing these issues, like securing
better resources or raising teacher pay, Republican leaders are
prioritizing their own political agendas, leaving our kids behind.

They’ve attacked LGBTQ+ students, banned books, and now they’re mandating
religious texts in our classrooms. It’s unconstitutional and un-American.

As State Rep. James Talarico pointed out, Republicans claim it’s the
parents' role to teach things like empathy, kindness, and basic sex
education to their children.

So why, then, is it the state's role to impose a specific religious
doctrine in our classrooms?

John, this is
exactly why Powered by People is organizing year-round in Texas. While
Republican officials are using schools as a platform for their
self-serving agendas, we’re focused on the real issues — fixing our
schools and ensuring our kids get the education they deserve. But we
cannot do it without your help.
