Help Us Celebrate Juneteenth

On June 19th, the Broward Democratic Party will join the nationwide celebration of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorating the final abolition of slavery in 1865 (2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation) when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the Civil War was over and enslaved people were free.
 
We encourage you to join the celebration by participating in one of the many local events taking place on the 19th.  Here's a list of some of the events:
 
1.  South Broward Juneteenth Virtual Celebration - hosted by the South Broward Juneteenth Committee - 6pm live on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/juneteenthsouthbroward/
 
2.  2020 Juneteenth Celebration - hosted by City of Coral Springs - 3pm on www.coralsprings.org/citytv
 
3.  Black Workers Matter in Broward - a rally hosted by SEIU - 3-6pm at the Broward County Governmental Center, 115 South Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL. Visit the event page on FB at https://www.facebook.com/events/1999088900224148 for more information.
 
4.  Porch Stories - hosted by S.D. Spady Cultural Arts Museum in collaboration with the Delray Beach Public Library - 10am on Facebook - The Museum will broadcast its first episode of “Porch Stories,” a simplified tale explaining Juneteenth to children and anyone else who wants to listen and learn.  The reading will be recorded the day of Juneteenth and will be live streamed via the museum's (https://www.facebook.com/SpadyMuseum/and library's Facebook pages.
 
5.  "When Liberty Burns"  - hosted by the Miami Film Festival - a special Juneteenth screening of a 2-hour-long award-winning film that documents the 1980 Miami race riots over the death of Arthur McDuffie, a black man, and subsequent acquittal of the white polite officers who killed him. For 24 hours on Juneteenth, anyone can rent and watch the film online for $13 at https://miamifilmfestival.com/when-liberty-burns-online-screening/.  A portion of the money raised will be donated to the Historic Hampton House community trust. 
 
6. Where Do We Go From Here? Join the Broward Black Elected Officials (BBEO) for a very special Juneteenth event,  They will be hosting a solution oriented discussion to remedy issues affecting the black community. We will take a look at the Criminal Justice System, Education, Health, the importance of voting and much more. These collaborative events foster solution-based approaches made for and by the community.
