I will fight with everything I’ve got to keep our neighbors home

Ayanna Pressley for Congress

Monday, as federal immigration officials in Boston bragged about tearing families apart and arresting 1,461 community members this month alone, I gathered with families desperate to reunite with their loved ones across town.

My constituent Kenia from Chelsea was driving to a Mother’s Day church service when ICE agents ripped her husband from the car in front of her children. “We are devastated,” said Kenia. “No one should live through this. He needs to come home."

"We are deeply traumatized," Mercedes from East Boston told us. "My husband and I can't sleep. I'm afraid to go out. I'm afraid to take my daughter to school. Our 12-year-old daughter who was born in this country has anxiety attacks."

Trump and his administration want to sow fear, chaos, and distrust in our government so that we feel alone and defeated. But we are not alone, and we are not giving up the fight.

We will not let this blatant disregard of humanity and constitutional rights continue.

Immigrants are our neighbors, our friends, our coworkers, our children. The fear in our community is palpable.

We’re seeing school children crying in their teachers’ arms, afraid that they’re going to come home to no parents.

We’re seeing a spike in no shows and cancellations in health clinics as patients would rather miss critical care than risk detainment.

We’re seeing elders bringing their medication with them everywhere they go for fear of being abducted and sent somewhere without access to necessary healthcare.

It’s happening in my district, in communities like East Boston, Chelsea, Somerville, Randolph, and in other parts of the state like Milford.

Donald Trump has used a timeless scare tactic: pointing at our most vulnerable and blaming them for every hardship while he is the one making life harder for our families.

These cruel raids do not keep our communities safer, they put our communities in danger.

But if there’s one thing I know about our district and this movement — we stand up for our neighbors. We fight for our community. And we won’t let Trump and ICE continue to terrorize our immigrant neighbors.

I will stay on top of this and fight with everything I’ve got to keep our neighbors home and our communities safe.
