The Trump administration just undermined federal protections for accessing emergency abortion care.
Picture going to the hospital with life-threatening pregnancy complications, only to be told you can't get the care you need because anti-abortion extremists have banned it. And the federal government refuses to protect your right to emergency care. That's now reality under the Trump administration.
Here's the bottom line: they're okay with letting people die as long as they can block access to abortion.
Under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), patients have a federal right to necessary emergency care—including abortion—when required to save a person's life. But the Trump administration just announced they're rolling back protections for pregnant people who need emergency abortion care. Stripping away this guidance means that pregnant people will die—and the Trump administration is refusing to protect them.

Rolling back protections for emergency abortion care will have drastic consequences for people of color and those living in states with abortion bans. Black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, and maternal mortality rates are higher in states with abortion bans than in states without them. Already, several women have died in states with abortion bans because they were denied care.
Republicans know exactly what happens when people are denied the emergency care they need, but they don't care—they want to ban all abortion, everywhere, at any cost.
