Diamond Bar, CA – The County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD), in collaboration with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), plan to conduct a prescribed burn in Tonner Canyon on Thursday, June 5, and Friday, June 6, 2025, weather permitting. This prescribed burn is part of ongoing efforts to improve ecosystem health, reduce wildfire risk, and improve public safety through proactive vegetation management.
Tonner Canyon is the 5,700 acre undeveloped canyon that extends in a crescent shape from the 60 Freeway on the north in Diamond Bar in Los Angeles County to the 57 Freeway on the south near Brea in Orange County. It also traverses the City of Chino Hills in San Bernardino County.
This prescribed burn is part of a larger proactive vegetation management project in Tonner Canyon that began in May of 2025, and runs through October of 2026, and includes a 350-acre area identified as high risk and strategically important. The project supports the Statewide Fuels Reduction Environmental Protection Plan and aligns with Governor Newsom’s Emergency Proclamation (Executive Order N-25-25) to expedite fuels reduction in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones.
Firefighters and camp crews will utilize hand-ignition techniques along with broadcast and pile burning to carefully burn approximately 36 acres located northwest of Tonner Canyon Motorway, below Diamond Ridge Estates and The Country Estates in the City of Diamond Bar. A small test burn will be conducted beforehand to confirm optimal conditions before proceeding with the full burn.
Operations will begin with a briefing at 8:00 a.m. each day, with ignition time weather dependent. The burn is anticipated to conclude by 4:00 p.m. daily. Prescribed burns are only conducted under favorable conditions to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Diamond Bar, Brea, Yorba Linda, Chino, and other nearby residents may notice smoke in the area. The LACoFD is working closely with the South Coast Air Quality Management District to monitor and address any air quality concerns.
