Hi John —
this email is a little different, and I’ll hope you’ll read it. I’m not
asking for you to chip in to my campaign. I just wanted to share some
thoughts with you after a really meaningful weekend.

More than a decade ago, I rode 545 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles
as part of the AIDS/LifeCycle. I was the first Member of Congress to join
the ride, raising money towards ending AIDS/HIV in our lifetimes and
helping prevent and treat it.

There were thousands of riders, a lot of ups and downs (quite literally),
hard wind, and some rain. I slept out in the tents in campgrounds, and was
awakened one night at 2 am when the sprinklers went on. Roadies helped us
with everything, both big and small, and those volunteers were the
lifeblood of the ride.

There was Red Dress Day, where riders dressed in – you guessed it – red
dresses and garb to remember those we lost to AIDS. (I wore a red shirt.)
As riders streak past, the hope is that they look like a red ribbon, the
universal symbol of HIV/AIDS remembrance.

What I remember most from that 545-mile ride were the stories. Talking to
riders about why they were riding, who they were riding for, and what the
ride meant to them. I remember their stories about friends and family
members they lost, and seeing their names on bike license plates as they
rode.

I certainly didn’t finish first or last, but its not a race, or if it is,
its a race for better treatments and cures.

Just take a look:

Well, as you may know, this weekend, I became the first U.S. Senator to
join the AIDS/LifeCycle ride. But because of votes in Washington, D.C., I
could only do the first day’s ride – eighty-one miles, starting at 6 am.

And I was so excited to suit up once again to help make HIV/AIDS a thing
of the past.

I hadn’t trained nearly enough, but I knew I needed to be a part of it.
This year, due to rising costs and changing needs, would be the last for
AIDS/LifeCycle.

There is nothing like getting out on the open road with a bunch of people
who are all going the same direction. The camaraderie, the discussions,
the pain, the joy.

You see a completely different side of the communities you’ve gotten to
know. As you’re cycling past the ocean, you see its majestic beauty from a
new perspective. As you’re huffing up a mountain, you notice just how many
rolling hills there are, and how rural much of California really is. As
you roll past towns and through cities, you see how remarkably beautiful
and diverse a state and people we are.

And when you’re riding for a cause like AIDS/LifeCycle, you remember why
you’re there. You think about all those who rode before you, and all those
who would never be able to join the ride because they were taken too soon
from this earth by a disease that we must all unite to end.

I also thought about you — the people who powered me. I asked you to chip
in, and you raised thousands for an amazing cause. So I wanted to say
thank you.

And look, here’s proof I completed the first leg! Not too shabby…

So, why did I share all of this with you?

Because I hope it will encourage you to search out opportunities to help
your community and the amazing people who live in it, and think about what
you want to ride for. What you want to do. Because you can make a
difference, you truly can.

And once again, thank you for powering my ride. It meant the world to me,
and all of those who are still riding.

Take care,

Adam
