Join our virtual phonebank tomorrow, June 5, to mobilize Iowans against Joni Ernst.

Indivisibles,

Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) was recently pressed on how she felt about Iowans dying due to SNAP and Medicaid cuts in the Republican reconciliation bill. You probably already heard what happened next, but if you haven’t, buckle up…

Bluesky post by April Glick Pulito: Joni Ernst, at her town hall last night. When the crowd said people will die due to Medicaid and SNAP cuts, she said: well we all are going to die. -- Click to play video of Ernst's gaffe

We’re betting that callous attitude doesn’t fly in Ernst’s home state of Iowa, where roughly 1-in-5 people are covered by Medicaid and thousands more rely on SNAP to keep groceries affordable. So we’re taking action to make sure her constituents hold her accountable.

Tomorrow, Indivisibles nationwide are calling Iowans to let them know what Ernst said and connect them directly to her office! Sign up for our virtual phonebank to hold Joni Ernst accountable tomorrow, June 5, starting at 11am ET.

Ernst may be cruel and deeply out-of-touch, but the political firestorm her comments are starting will make voting for this bill a dangerous political gamble.

She represents a purplish state that relies heavily on Medicaid funding. If we show her thousands of Iowans are fired up and ready to hold her accountable, she may still decide these cuts are too politically toxic to vote for.

But if we let rhetoric like Ernst’s go unanswered, she -- and other battleground Republicans like Susan Collins and Thom Tillis -- may feel free to keep slashing and burning the lifesaving programs we need.

As the reconciliation bill gets reworked in the Senate, every community -- red and blue, big cities and quiet farm towns -- needs to speak in one unified voice against the cuts to SNAP and Medicaid.

That’s the only way we’ll create the political pressure we need to disrupt Republicans' bill and stop the cuts. And it’s going to take all of us stepping up and having important conversations.

Please sign up for our virtual phonebank at 11am ET on Thursday, June 5, and let’s turn the temperature up on Joni Ernst and Senate Republicans.

Thank you,
Indivisible Team

P.S. Tomorrow’s phonebank is one in a series targeting vulnerable Republican Senators across the country! You can sign up for future shifts -- targeting additional states and senators -- on the same Mobilize page. We don’t announce target states/senators for all phonebanks in advance because they change as news puts certain senators (like Ernst this week) on the hot seat.

P.P.S. Our phonebanks need to take place during weekday business hours when Senate phone lines are staffed, but if you can’t make a weekday shift, there are other ways to take action. Email your own Republican Senator about stopping the SNAP/Medicaid cuts, or chip in to fund billboards and other programs calling out Republican Senators!
