Dear John,
While President Trump and his billionaire cronies say there is no money for healthcare, education, or Social Security, they are spending 100 million taxpayer dollars to hold a military parade on Trump’s birthday. On Saturday June 14, at over 1,400 “No Kings” events across the country, working people will come together to protest Trump’s anti-worker policies and increasingly authoritarian rule.

Since his inauguration, President Trump has issued executive orders to cancel collective bargaining agreements and revoke union rights for hundreds of thousands of federal workers. He has unilaterally cut federal funding to a wide variety of programs and institutions which serve the American people, from healthcare and education to scientific research and environmental protection. He has ordered mass firings of federal workers who do everything from administering social security to taking care of veterans.
The Trump administration has detained and deported immigrants who are in the country legally without a shred of due process or evidence. Rümeysa Öztürk, a graduate student, university worker and union member, was abducted off the streets near her home in Massachusetts by six masked officers. The only justification offered for her imprisonment was the fact that she signed an op-ed in the local newspaper.
These are the actions of a wannabe king, not the leader of a democracy.
We know from the experience of other countries where the working class has defeated authoritarian governments that the labor movement has an important role to play in defending democracy.
