In the midst of devastation in Gaza, a glimmer of hope remains — innovation.

Gaza Sky Geeks — as in "the sky’s the limit" — was founded in 2011 to empower young Palestinians to succeed in the global tech sector. The program trains coders, connects freelancers with companies around the world, and nurtures start-ups.

While the war has destroyed all of Gaza Sky Geeks’ co-working spaces and training buildings, it hasn’t crushed the entrepreneurial spirit.

Today, the program carries on with our team members working from tents, under siege, yet still launching startups, studying tech, and supporting digital projects around the world.

At least 1.9 million people — or about 90 percent of the population — across the Gaza Strip have been displaced during the war — many have been displaced repeatedly, some 10 times or more.
Gaza Sky Geeks is thriving, despite the dire circumstances. But the program’s operations have been severely impacted, which will have a direct impact on Palestine’s economy once the war ends.

More than one-third of Gaza Sky Geeks’ employees have fled to other countries, representing a significant drain of tech talent. Some have tragically lost their lives while others are striving to survive, protect their families, and maintain their livelihoods under the unimaginable circumstances of war.

Yet, the Gaza Sky Geeks’ mission remains unwavering: empowering the resilient youth of Palestine, enabling them to realize their full potential and earn globally competitive incomes through high-value digital work. Employing large numbers of young Palestinians in online work is crucial for Palestine's future.

Mercy Corps will continue to do everything possible to protect our team members, rebuild, and support all families in Gaza long after the violence ends.

Thank you for standing with our team members in Gaza and around the world.

Sincerely,

The Mercy Corps team
