Public trust in UK news coverage has fallen to among the lowest levels globally, according to the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism Digital News Report 2020. Only 28% of those polled said they had faith in most of the UK’s news most of the time, down from 40% a year ago. I’m not surprised by these findings as broadcasters like the BBC are alienating their audience with 'woke' pandering.

The problem we have is much deeper. It seems that the real threat we face now is a genuine threat to free speech. I have never known a time when I have seen so many people so scared to write and say and speak and broadcast what they think. It really is very disturbing.

Political activists now vilify dissenters and agitate against businesses to deprive funding and advertisers. It’s not just mob rule on the streets, but online and elsewhere too.

The biggest casualty of this crisis so far has been free speech – the ability of people to ask questions about current events. In the end, free speech must emerge the winner.
