Hi! This is a quick note from me as I get ready to meet a great group of folks next week with our first-ever book writing workshop ([link removed]) at Poynter.
This newsletter will be taking a two-week break (that workshop, plus a few days off with kid stuff 🏐). Before I go, I wanted to make sure you know about a free webinar we have coming up in less than two weeks.
On Monday, June 16, “Shut Out: How Pulitzer winners worked with reluctant sources to tell powerful stories” ([link removed]) will tackle what to do when sources are reluctant and institutions are resistant. I’ll be talking with three very smart people: Kavitha Surana from ProPublica, Alissa Zhu from The Baltimore Banner, and my colleague, Kelly McBride.
I hope you can join us. Sign up (for free!) here ([link removed]) .
In the meantime, if you haven’t already, read “Life of the Mother” ([link removed]) from ProPublica, The Baltimore Banner’s investigation ([link removed]) into that city’s overdose crisis and our recent piece on source removal requests ([link removed]) .
While you’re here:
* From Nieman Lab, read about the launch ([link removed]) of Lookout Local’s second newsroom, in Eugene, Oregon.
* Apply to the Medicine in the Media ([link removed]) workshop, happening next month in New York City.
* The schedule for the Online Journalism Association’s annual conference is starting to take shape ([link removed]) . I’ll be there with my colleague, Tony Elkins, to talk about burnout. If you’re going, please say hello!
* And mark your calendars for Oct. 8-10 for the Mental Health in Journalism Summit ([link removed]) .
That’s it for me. See you here again on June 25!
