MAY 2025
|
Dear Friend,
In mid-May, a U.S. House committee voted to include language that could have been used to silence the voices of those whose views may not align with the current regime in the larger budget bill that's continuing to move through Congress. The provision would have given the secretary of the Treasury the power to target any entity as a “terrorist-supporting organization” -- no matter what it actually does -- and potentially strip them of their tax-exempt status. It would have widened the avenues for this regime to go after its political enemies. It also could have harmed organizations that protect our rights and serve our communities -- from soup kitchens to youth basketball teams. It was the third attempt since late last year to pass this legislation.
But once again, thanks to a massive outcry, including swift action by members like you, the “nonprofit killer” language was taken out of the budget bill.
Despite that critical victory, the rest of the budget bill is still moving forward. And it would funnel billions of dollars in critical funding to weapons contractors, private prison profiteers, and the administration’s billionaire backers.
How will they pay for it? By gutting vital and life-giving programs like Medicaid and SNAP that millions of people across the U.S. rely on.
That's right. The current regime and its billionaire backers are trying their best to gut the governmental programs and policies that protect our health, our lives, and the environment -- all so they can reap even more riches and consolidate even more power, at our expense.
We can make sure that they won’t get away with it. Take action now and let your Senators know they must vote no on this budget bill.
And once you've done that, check out a few more ways you've made an impact this month:

REJECTING WATER PRIVATIZATION IN PITTSBURGH!
|
Earlier this month, Pittsburgh residents voted to keep the city’s water and sewer system public for generations to come! More than 78 percent of voters supported a measure that prevents the sale or lease of Pittsburgh’s water and sewer system to private entities. It’s a great victory for the water justice movement, and it was in a large part thanks to our grassroots partners at Pennsylvania United and the Our Water Campaign. It came right on the heels of the second annual Flint/Pittsburgh day of action that brought community members together to keep water public, safe, and accesible. Read our statement about the day of action. And stay tuned for more about the victory in Pittsburgh on our blog soon.

Taking on corporate power WITH THE POP CORPS
|
At our May POP Corps meeting, we gathered to ground ourselves in community and purpose before heading into the Rise for Freedom training on mutual aid and structures for stronger local organizing. Together, we explored how to deepen our networks of care and resistance. Folks came away with practical tools to build sustainable, community-rooted power. The POP Corps unites people to challenge corporate control of government, stand with communities harmed by corporate abuse, and mobilize networks for strategic action. Join the POP Corps today to get plugged into our growing movement before our next meeting on June 26.

Corporate Accountability stops transnational corporations from devastating democracy, trampling human rights, and destroying our planet. We are building a world rooted in justice where corporations answer to people, not the other way around -- a world where every person has access to clean water, healthy food, a safe place to live, and the opportunity to reach their full human potential.
