Your weekly London local government update

Why are London boroughs' finances on the brink?

London boroughs are grappling with enormous financial pressures. With the government preparing its upcoming Spending Review, and with funding reforms promised promised in 2026/27, London Councils is making the case for restoring stability to town hall finances. This would put boroughs in a much stronger position to deliver services and drive economic growth across the capital.

Our shorth video below sets out the perfect storm facing borough finances – including more than a decade of structural underfunding, rising demand for services, and new responsibilities placed on councils by central government - and what needs to be done to restore stability to borough budgets.

Climate Programme partners with UK Green Building Council

London Councils' Climate Programme is partnering with UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), Bioregional and Preoptima to provide borough officers and councillors with free training.

The training programme will focus on how low carbon principles and approaches can be embedded into planning processes across the capital.

Consultation opportunity: towards a new London Plan

Last month, the Mayor launched engagement on the next London Plan. Produced by the Mayor, the London Plan is a blueprint for development and growth in London, and will look forward to 2050.

This consultation seeks views to inform the drafting of the next London Plan, and will end on Sunday 22 June.

You are welcome to submit evidence that could include:

  • Published reports, research, case studies or other information about how London should change or develop in the future.
  • Personal accounts of how development, buildings, places, spaces and planning affect different communities, especially impacts that relate to age, disability, sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, marital status or pregnancy and maternity. This may include personal accounts of how people from different groups experience places very differently and the experiences of those who identify with more than one of these characteristics.
  • International or national examples of best practice
  • Suggestions for how engagement through this process can reach a more diverse range of Londoners.
