Yesterday, in a landmark 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that it is illegal for an employer to discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Every civil rights achievement is the product of generations of hard work and sacrifice by committed activists willing to take on entrenched power.

So, we must see this ruling for the monumental victory it is – the confirmation of the simple right to hold a job without an employer penalizing someone for who they are.

And let's not forget this important feature of civil rights victories: nobody loses. Sure, there's a group of people who will see this decision as an attack and a handful of others who'll stoke that fear. But the fact is that the Court ruled in favor of humanity. That's a win – for all of us.

Make no mistake, this is a huge win. Yet, many states still discriminate in housing, education, and public accommodations, which is why we must pass the Equality Act, of which I am a proud original cosponsor. There's plenty more for us to do – there always is – and we can't let up. Every day, we're reminded that we're still fighting for some of the most basic civil rights in our country.

It goes to show how much work needs to be done in the fight for liberty and justice for all.

None of that changes the fact that today, our country became a better place for everyone who calls it home.
