Yeehaw, John, we made it!

Texas Legislators have officially adjourned Sine Die, making yesterday the last day of the 89th Texas Legislative Session, and that means this is the last installment of The Lege Lowdown.

Well, heck, what a whirlwind! Right-wing legislators put politics over people till the cows came home, but we didn't back down. We showed up, stopped bad bills, and got Texans fired up about what matters most.

Our proudest moment? That Memorial Day Read-In when we mobilized over 100 folks to celebrate our freedom to read while legislators tried passing book-banning bill SB 13.

Check out The LAST Lege Lowdown!

Ready for the roundup? We're breakin' down where key bills landed across education, religious freedom, LGBTQIA+ rights, reproductive freedom, and voting access.

Public Education: The bad news? Vouchers passed with SB 2, and book-banning bill SB 13 is headed to Gov. Abbott's desk. The good news? We stopped HB 3225, which would've banned books in municipal libraries too.

LGBTQIA+ Equality: This was a tough session for our community. The discriminatory "Trans Tax" (SB 1257) became law, and anti-trans bills like HB 229 are awaiting the Governor's signature. But we stopped Pride flag bans and discriminatory restroom bills!

Religious Freedom: Both SB 10 (mandatory Ten Commandments posters) and SB 11 (required "prayer time") passed and are headed to Gov. Abbott's desk.

Voting Rights: We scored wins here! We stopped SB 16, a deliberate effort to suppress the people’s vote by adding new, unnecessary barriers to registration. Forcing people to produce documents like passports or birth certificates would have excluded thousands of eligible voters, especially those already facing systemic barriers.

There's lots more on bills around our issue areas in the full Lege Lowdown!

Make sure you check out the full edition of The Lege Lowdown for all the info on what passed, what didn't, and what it'll mean for you. And don't forget to pass it along to your progressive pals!

Well, it's time to hang up my hat. The Lege Lowdown may be over, but our work to advance progress in Texas goes on. Make sure you’re followin’ us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to stay informed on how the bills passed during the session will affect you and how you can continue to take action.

We wanna holler a Texas-sized THANK YOU to all y'all who paid attention and fought back with us during this session. It sure as hell wasn't easy. And a special shoutout to everybody who has donated to our Rapid Response Fund. It ain't exaggeratin' to say we couldn't have made it through without you!
